Inspiration

Kat's Finding Your Eye Journey of Recognition course has really provided a wonderful opportunity to grow and reflect.  Our assignment this week was to venture to a gallery, notice which artworks appeal to us and think about the influence other artists have on our own creativity.  I noticed that she didn't say go to an "art museum".  I've been to the major art museums in my area, but the wording she used caused me to investigate  - to see if there are any smaller galleries close by.  Wow!  What a list I came up with!  So many treasures to be explored right in my own backyard!  Who knew?  That was a lesson in itself!

I had recently been to the Philadelphia Museum of Art with my oldest daughter, so I decided to go to the Brandywine River Museum.  The works of N.C. Wyeth, Andrew Wyeth and others are on display there.
I noticed that some of my photos reminded me of Andrew Wyeth's work.  I guess it isn't too surprising, considering he painted the same Chadds Ford area that I was photographing.
It's interesting how influences sneak in without you even knowing it!

  1. Oh I just love Andrew Wyeth's work and you're quite right--the photos you've posted are very reminiscent of his paintings. You're right--influences creep in without our even knowing it.

  2. I don't know Andrew Wyeth's work, but I like the photos you have shown here. The white house taken from different parts of the grounds with the dried grasses, winter trees and a lot of sky are all very peaceful. I like photo number four because of the overall harmony and I also like the last photo as the house takes on a more myterious role slightly hidden by the trees. Nice soft colours in all the photos.

  3. I love the connection that you have to this area. Even from your images, I can feel how comfortable it is to you. It makes me want to visit. My favorite is the second to last one. I can just imagine a picnic under the tree enjoying the view!

  4. It's so fun to see you make these connections with another artist's work! As you look at his paintings, I bet you will find hints of not only what is similar, but things that will make you a better photographer. I'm glad to see that your view of where to find art is expanded too! Awesome! Thanks for sharing the results of this exercise with us.

  6. Kathy, have you been the Philadelphia Art Museum's new Van Gogh exhibit? Been wondering how it is. I want to venture into the city for it. I have never been to the Brandywine River Museum. But you are right, there are TONS of beautiful smaller galleries/museums around.

  7. Hi Kathy,
I'm a fan of the work of the Wyeth family members, particularly Andrew. The strong simple compositions in Andrew's works are great ones for photographers to study. I think that you have captured that feel in your first three photos of the Chadds Ford area. Well done!
